DESCRIPTION
A woman of extraordinary conviction, humility and passion, Aung
San Suu Kyi led the pro-democracy movement in Burma in the late 1980s and
became one of the world's most prominent political prisoners. The
daughter of a Burmese national hero who helped negotiate Burma's independence
from the British, mother of two and devout Buddhist, she would go on to found
Burma's National League for Democracy which triumphed in the General Election
of 1990, but was denied power by the military junta.
Aung San Suu Kyi never tired in her struggle for democracy, continuing to be a voice for her people from the confines of her home, where she spent 15 years under house arrest. Her courageous stance drew international media attention, and turned a spotlight onto the oppression and persecution of Burmese nationals. She was awarded the 1991 Noble Peace Prize in recognition of her efforts, which combine pragmatism and idealism in a battle that continues to this day.
A fearless leader, compelling public speaker and visionary, she has become an inspiration people around the world. Released from house arrest in 2010, Suu Kyi recently announced that she will seek the presidency of Myanmar in the 2015 national elections.
Aung San Suu Kyi will speak at the Sydney Opera House on 27 th of November, in her first official visit to Australia. Chancellors and Vice Chancellors from the University of Sydney and UTS will pay special tribute to Aung San Suu Kyi by awarding her prestigious Honorary Doctorates Degrees from the two Universities.
This will be a rare opportunity to hear from one of the most significant political figures and tenacious activists of our time. Audience members will be able to participate in a Q & A at the end of the event.
